Piero Viola was a young cardiologist from Reggio Calabria in Southern Italy. He had a strong passion for basketball and so, he founded an amateur league team. Unfortunately he died prematurely in 1966. A few months later, his twin brother, Judge Giuseppe Viola, received a visit from some partners of his late brother. They implored him to keep the team alive and take over the reigns. In honor of his brother he agreed. Soon afterwards he realized that this team could also manifest itself as a symbol; a chance for the whole city to redeem itself from crime and degradation. And so it was, that after a few short years, his team became one of the most successful franchises to ever play in the Italian championship. Then something happened…
