Hagos Kidane was born in Italy. His parents, both African, left their home and country years ago in order to build a better life in a better land. Today, Kidane bridges both worlds as a cultural mediator working for the Italian government. His connection with Africa is strong, its in his blood... but he is Italian. When the opportunity presented itself to get involved in save and rescue missions operated by the Italian Navy in the Sicilian Channel, he jumped on board. His contributions are crucial. Speaking many languages, including a few Arabic dialects, is sometimes the deciding factor between life and death. Every year the Italian Navy rescues more than 60,000 migrants from the Mediterranean Sea. Unfortunately, the number of lives lost in their attempt to reach Europe is unknown: UN records show that nearly 10,000 people lose their lives every year trying. Nobody knows exactly how many boats disappear without a trace. In this short film, we document what happens on a save and rescue mission off the coast of Libya.
